Commando Joe’s Programme Starts ‘In Ernest’

Commando Joe’s Character Education programme has come to Raleigh Learning Trust and has been embedded into the Friday afternoon slot at Westbury Academy.  After the first week’s successful launch, with Mr Morgan and Mr Wragg working with pupils to cross a river of rapids, pupils will now work closely with their class and key stage staff.

In key stage 2, Mr Hines has encouraged the pupils to learn more about the famous explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton.  In one of their recent missions 2 teams competed against each other in freezing temperatures of Westbury’s playground to gather as much food and water for their expedition as they possibly could.  The staff and pupil’s enthusiasm was amazing! They learnt all about team work and supporting each other.  They also discussed what foods and luxury items from home they’d miss most (Henry said he’d hate to miss out on his In key stage 3, year 7 have been learning about Leif Ericsson, the Viking and have recently been working to build long boats. Whilst year 8 have been exploring deep space and looking into life on board a spacecraft, like their character Tim Peake.  Year 9 have utilised their bravery, agility and strength skills by channelling their inner Spartacus.  In fact, they even got Mr Morgan to have a go at the bravery challenge!

Finally, in key stage 4 Mr Thurlow’s volunteer group have been looking at ways of supporting the school by creating a more pleasing common room space for its key stage 4 pupils. This is leading into a larger framework of coaching and how they can assist in a wider way and combines character education with their Duke of Edinburgh award.  We may even see them assisting in key stage 2 or 3 at some point soon!
